You can absolutely use momentary switches, but it sounds like not a sustain pedal. However you can set up a switch on the MC6 to do exactly what you want, or use a proper 3 or 6 button AUX controller. Why can’t you use one of the switches rather than a sustain pedal?
I have the mkII now but had the original and used momentary commands all the time. And I find their support to be very good. I don’t think they are super active on the forums but respond to emails fairly quickly (might take a day or two since they are in Singapore). And the online manuals are helpful too. If you ever have an issue you can email james@morningstar.com or help@morningstar.com . They work fast to resolve any issues.
So I politely ask that folks ignore the advice about support and momentary switches.
Tries both Aux and Expression both do not work, have tried with TR and TRS in Aux what ever is plugged into the Ex input changes it to K and none of the other buttons can be accessed until it is unplugged.
Folks beware if you are thinking about buying an MC6 you can not use momentary switches and the support is not good.
You need to set up Exp1 and Exp2 during global setup. Your options will be Expression or Aux. You’ll want to set one of the ports to be Aux. I’m not sure if you need to make a TRS cable. I’d try using the TS cable as is and see if it works. The AUX is set up so that tip = one preset, ring = a second preset and tip + ring = a third. So I want to say the ring and tip+ring presets will be ignored. But maybe James can chime in!
The jack is a ts should I solder on a TRS? When I connect a pedal to the EX 1 or 2 the only choice I’m given is ‘expression’ nothing else? So I am unable to select anything for the pedal?
Looking at the M Audio sustain pedal, it looks like it has a TS cable instead of a TRS. That might cause issues (not damaging, but the MC6 might not send messages if it’s connected). Or it might not and it’ll work as mentioned above, where the R (ring) is ignored. Connect and find out. But long story short, see above for how to set up the momentary command!
I’m not sure if you can connect just a single switch. Possibly, and then the TRS would just ignore the other two commands. So if you could connect a single switch, then...
You’ll want to set up a Toggle Hold message, either a PC Toggle Hold or CC Toggle Hold, depending on how you’re using your device. The Toggle Hold message is effectively a momentary switch - does one thing when pressed down and a second thing when released.
It’s a MC Mk1 - yes I want to connect an M-Audio (piano style) momentary footswitch...its for a vocal harmony unit, so when I press down and hold the harmony is engaged and then disengages when i release it.
I don't quite follow. Are you wanting to add an AUX switch to EXP 1 or EXP 2, and on that AUX set up a momentary switch?
Also, what controller do you have (MK I or MK II). On MK II it would be pretty easy to set up a momentary action. You would have your "on" message send on press down, and your "off" message send on release. So if you wanted to momentarily engage a pedal while the switch is held down, and bypass when released, that's what you would do.
If that's not what you meant, could you provide a little more detail?
